Parenthood

"My heart aches, and a drousy numbness pains my senses"

But still I'm his mother and I love him. What parent wouldn't sacrifice their sanity in hopes their child finds their way in life and eventually finds success with wise choices.

Carry on Tuesday

"We'd better get back, 'cause it'll be dark soon, and they mostly

come at night... mostly."

Turning off the television Mary gave herself a shake. She knew better than to watch such things late
at night. Sounds and shadows seemed to be amplified as the moon ascended towards its apex in the night sky. Giving the curtains a tug, Mary closed them with a quick yank.

Right, a cup of tea before bed, then she'd crawl into bed with her flannel pj's and dreams.

As she was turning the covers down to crawl in, Mary thought she heard a noise coming from the shed outside. Already spooked from the movie, she gave herself a stern talking to and tried to ignore her wayward thoughts.

The resounding echo's of the shed door slamming against the side of the shed did away with the supposing and Mary's heartbeat jumped tenfold. Who or what could be out there this late at night?
Bravely peeking out the window, Mary didn't see any movement. Should she go out or just let it be until the morning? Opting for the morning, once again she crawled back into bed.

She was about to drop off into REM sleep when Mary sat straight up. What was that? "Who's there", she asked? "Hello"?

The sound of footfalls on the steps had her reaching for her cellphone. Feeling around as quietly and quickly as she could, Mary remembered she'd left it in her purse down stairs. Of course that was about right she mumbled.

Pulling the covers up to her throat, she tried not to whimper with the fear which choked her. How did they get in? What did they want? Chills of certain doom raced up her arms.

Creakkkkkkkkk, the door to her bedroom was slowly opening. Mary starred wide-eyed at the person coming in her room. Did she say person, she meant thing. All hunched over and dragging something towards her bed Mary fairly knew this was her last breathing moment.

Right when she was about to scream, her father straightened up and gave a jump. "Mary, I thought you'd be asleep".

Giving way to tears Mary yelled at her dad, "you scared the life out of me dad. What are you doing here at this hour?"

"Mary calm down, I'm sorry I scared you. I forgot to stock your wood, so I wanted to fill up your bins. It's supposed to be cold tonight and I knew you'd wake up in the wee hours from the cold. Anyway so here I am."

Now laughing Mary gave her dad a hug. "Thanks dad, really thank you so much. I'd been watching those creepy Alien movies beforehand and when I heard the sounds outside and then you coming up the steps, I thought I was going to die."

"Mary what did I tell you about watching those scary movies so late at night?" Turning around her father went over to the fireplace and stoked the dieing embers to flame.

Stepping back to the bed, Mary's father slowly began to remove the skin covering his face. The last thing Mary saw was the sharp teeth protruding from the creature she thought was her dad.

Weather (prompt 2 Inkwell Drops)

It was a humid October day. Fall's demand for recognition had the trees shedding their clothes. With a cup of coffee in hand, Melissa pushed open the screen door.

She loved this season. It was a time the heated weather of Summer was laid to rest. Oklahoma was known for being one of the states that lived in tornado alley. This pass Summer had seen quite a bit of wicked storms.

Thinking about the rain that was falling, even now, she hoped soon it would let up. So many other states were feeling the dread of floods, while other lands, parched from lack of rain, died and withered.

What was it with the weather these days, she pondered?  So unpredictable. Hopefully this winter wouldn't be too harsh.  The changing of the seasons were so drastic anymore. One would have never heard of tornado's in fall or winter, but they happened quite often now.

She wouldn't be surprised to hear on the weather channel tonight, the conditions were right for one. Not only was it humid, but the weather was a bit warm. Cooler weather was setting in later, so the mixing of the two conditons could result in an off season tornado or two.

Watching the yellow swirling pieces of plastic, that hung from the porch, she looked towards the south. She felt in in her bones.  Not only that, she recognized the anvil shaped cloud forming in the distance.  It wouldn't happen tonight she realized.

Before she could turn around and get back into the house, hail started pelting the ground. It wasn't long before she heard the noise, much like a train sounding it's presence.

"Silence Is Golden"

If only she'd listened! How often she'd heard those words, "Silence is golden". Clarissa had been so stubborn though, she had wanted her voice to be heard. Well it had and now she had to pay the consequences of her actions.

It had been on a Monday when she'd seen the notice,"Come and join your voice with others".

Well why not she reasoned, after all she sounded good in the shower. Her voice might have squeaked here or there on the notes, but her pitch was spot on. She'd give it a go, the worst that could happen would be she'd not make the cut.

Clarissa practiced every moment she got, singing at the top of her voice to "I Did It My Way". Only a time or two did the neighbors tap on the wall. She just brushed it off, they did not appreciate the finer melodies of old.

Audition day came. Dressing the part, she made her way to Eden's Place. When her time came, she walked up the the stage with all the confidence of a seasoned pro. The music was keyed, the notes began to play and Clarissa sang with practiced ease.

As the last of the melody gave way to silence, Clarissa stood waiting for a response. When it came, her hopes of a singing career lay shattered at the end of the steps she descended. How could they have been so cruel?

Lifting her head high, Clarissa told them all to, "kiss her grits" and marched herself out of there. If only that had been the ending.  On the six o'clock news pieces of her audition were shown on TV.
How would she be able to show her face around town anymore? If only she'd paid heed to those words, "Silence is golden".

Sighing she began thumbing through the phone book looking for a voice instructor who taught tone deaf people.
